Reason and all About Changed Facebook

Photo, Vids, Phenomenal, Inspiration, life style There’s quite a few articles out there about how all of these changes go down but it’s hard to understand how they will affect marketers and Social Media managers… so here’s my thoughts: a) “Top Stories” vs. recent stories: Just before the announcement of the upcoming changes for Facebook we saw changes on our main feed. There’s a clear division between what Facebook considers are “Top Stories” and all other recent stories. I still don’t trust Facebook’s algorithm, it still marks stories that are completely irrelevant to me. In theory, Facebook will eventually remember our choices and only pick Top Stories that we will actually enjoy. As managers of company or branded Pages we do our best to provide creative and engaging content. Starting this week, users will now have more control over their feeds and us marketers, well, we’ll have switch it up to deliver even more interesting and valuable content to stay in those “Top Stories”! b) Goodbye “Like”, hello sharing: A great change that I’ve noticed in the past weeks with some of the brands that I manage is the amount of people that have begun sharing and tagging on Facebook. I’m still not sure if this is a natural growth step or if it’s been product of some of Facebook’s recent changes. Somehow it seems that users are being more open to share, which can be a great opportunity for brands and the content they post on their Facebook Page. For years marketers and brands have been creating strategies for users to “Like” them and nothing else. With the introduction of all these changes, the loss of the “Like” and the arrival of Facebook Gestures I believe that this sharing will be the key to success, creating opportunities for our users to share stories about our brands or services. c) Facebook scrapbooking: Facebook Timeline will not only allow users to look at their profile back in time (I took a peek at 2007, funny!), they will also be able to post events or pictures about their past, basically using Facebook as a scrapbook. Think of it, if users begin to make use of mentions, places, tags and new gestures back to the day they were born, that alone can become a wonderful sharing frenzy! The truth has come out on the recent catfight video featuring a celebrity blogger.

The video is indeed a PR stunt created by blogger Peggy Heng, 22, a model and gadget ambassador for Stuff magazine.

After the catfight video was posted on the internet, Heng went on to write about a painful breakup with her boyfriend and had elicited concern from many of her blog readers. See the original catfight video here.

But when the video was finally revealed to be a PR stunt, netizens were largely outraged and slammed the video, calling it "pathetic", "lame", "immature" and "attention-seeking". Many also complained that the video had sparked genuine concern among Heng's readers and had resulted in the readers feeling "cheated".

The original catfight video is apparently Part 1 of two videos in a PR campaign by Heng to "equip young Singaporeans with social skills to help them recover from failed relationships", according to an interview Heng had with The New Paper.

Part 2 of the video reveals the PR campaign and shows Heng promoting a "Green Light" party event slated to be held at a nightspot.

Heng also performs another stunt in the second video. In it she is shown being "coerced" to perform oral sex on a man as part of a bargain to take down the original catfight video. That is until she turns around to say that "this" (oral sex) is not the way to "solve your relationship problems".

Facebook Announcements about Rumors Video Chat

MySpace (remember them?) founder Tom Anderson has his own thoughts about the battle between social network, Facebook, and new contender, search engine Google.

Anderson was referring to Facebook’s announcement last week that they were adding Skype video conversations. According to PCMag.com, Anderson said MySpace had one on one video chatting in 2004, and had Skype video calls in 2007.

“People weren't ready for it back then—now is the time, and FB has the userbase," Anderson said.

CNN reports the Facebook version of Skype will appear as a "call" button at the top of users' profile pages. By clicking that or finding someone in a new "buddy list" bar on the right, Facebook users with webcams can have visual conversations. Facebook added the new service for millions of users on Wednesday and plans to add it to more in time.

The New York Times mentions that Facebook doesn’t let more than two participate in video chats. Skype has group chats, but it costs users $9 per month. Facebook does warn users that some computers may have hardware or software compatibility issues with the service.

Tom Anderson’s last post on MySpace was on March 1.

On his Facebook page, which seems wrong, he said, “I started MySpace in 2003, it sold in 2005 to NewsCorp for $580 million, and I stayed there to run it until April 2009. Now a new owner bought MySpace from News Corp. I'm not a fan of the new MySpace, though the team's heart was in the right place. Maybe the new owner has good ideas."

According to startribune.com, Skype is taking a calculated risk to expand its user base. Getting access to Facebook's 750 million users would lift Skype, which has about 170 million regular users.

Skype is also considering starting paid services on Facebook, like the ability to call any phone while using Facebook. read more
